Tag Talk

Protein is protein, right? Not exactly, although you’d never know it to look at some feed manufacturers’ feed tags.

The fact is, feed tags on two different bags of horse feed might indicate the same amounts of total protein, but the quality and "potency" of the amino acids in those bags could be very different. It all depends on the protein source.

At Purina Mills, our Ph.D. equine nutritionists carefully formulate each and every horse feed we sell, making sure we’re using the highest quality ingredients available. They don't just look at total crude protein, they look at the quality of the protein and the profile of the amino acids provided for growth, performance, and muscle repair. They don’t just add vitamins and minerals, they consider how those nutrients interact—because too much of a good thing can be a very bad thing for horses.

Thanks to our state-of-the-art equine research facility, we have the ability to field test every feed formulation.
