Open/Early Gestation—A mare in the first few months of gestation has nutrient requirements similar to a maintenance horse. The fetus isn’t growing much or putting a nutritional drain on the mare. It is important to maintain good body condition with adequate protein, vitamins and minerals. This can be accomplished with a good quality maintenance diet.
