Purina Mills Equine Senior® horse feed for maintenance of mature horses
- Equine Senior® horse feed by Purina Mills is a specifically formulated horse feed which addresses the “special nutritional needs” of older horses with less efficient metabolic systems
- It can be fed as a complete feed by itself or in a combination with pasture or hay. “All-in-One” pre-processed pelleted and patented extruded “pre-cooked” feed form
- Equine Senior® horse feed may be fed as a complete feed because it is formulated with high quality roughage. You may also feed with hay or pasture per directions
- Winter feeding—In winter, the amount fed may need to be increased by about 10% to 15% to offset increased body heat losses
- Hay—Small amounts (4-5 pounds per day) of good quality hay may be fed along with the feed. The amount of Equine Senior® horse feed can be reduced about one pound for each 2 pounds of hay fed.
- In cases of extreme teeth problems or no teeth at all, Equine Senior® horse feed may be mixed with warm or cold water to make a soft mash or soup. Allow it to sit for five minutes until mash from water can be adjusted to the horse’s preference.
- Do not feed free-choice
- Feed at regular times (at least twice daily). When feeding rates exceed 1% of body weight, three daily feedings is preferred
- Any feed changes should be made gradually over a period of 7 to 10 days
- Changes in the rate of feeding should not exceed one pound per day for each horse
- Feed according to the recommended amounts shown. For more specific feeding recommendations contact a Purina Mills representative
- Feed along with at least 1-1.5% of horse’s body weight of good quality hay or the equivalent in pasture to make a complete ration (hay and pasture are optional when feeding Equine Family or other complete feeds with roughage included)
- Have plenty of fresh, clean water available at all times
- Prevent the rapid eating by the horse of any feed stuffs
- Store feed in a dry, well-ventilated area protected from rodents and insects
- Do not feed moldy or insect-infested feed to animals as it may cause illness or death
- This product to be fed to the animal species as directed on the label
- In addition to nutritional care and consultation, be sure to make regular veterinary checkups and farrier appointments part of your horse wellness program
