Energy

Energy is probably the most misunderstood component of nutrition.

Purina Mills has done extensive research in the area of energy, and we’ll attempt to clear up some of the confusion by taking a look at what energy is, where it comes from and how it is used.

To put it simply, energy is the fuel used by the horse for all functions, including maintenance of body tissues, growth, lactation, performance, etc. Energy itself cannot be measured, but it can be converted to heat, which can be measured.

Energy Requirements

Energy Sources
Energy = Calories
We measure the energy stored in feed in kilocalories (kcal or Calories). For horse feeds, we refer to Calories of digestible energy—the amount of energy available to the horse subsequent to digestion.
