Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja spp.).
This is a secondary selenium accumulator. It is an annual or perennial plant that is herbaceous, but many are woody at the base only. It is a partial root parasite of various other plants. The leaves are alternate and sessile. The flowers are arranged in terminal bracted spikes that are usually petaloid and ranging from scarlet to yellow in color. The Indian paint-brush, the Wyoming state flower, is common throughout the northern Rocky Mountain states, particularly at higher elevations.
